How Do I Know I Am Saved?

Listen to this devotional:
Listen while you read: "How Sweet The Name Of Jesus Sounds"1 (Lyrics)

1 John 5:13 – These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God. (NKJV)

At the age of 12, I was attending a youth service at our church when an event took place that literally changed my life. My three friends and I were sitting in the back seat. When the sermon was over, one of them looked at me and said, "Let's go up to the altar and get saved." It was panic time for me, and just the thought of walking all the way up there was holding me back. After encouraging each other, all four of us stood up and walked to a row of chairs set up for the purpose. We knelt down next to each other not knowing what to do next.

I was on my knees with both hands on the chair when I sensed someone behind me. The leader of our Sunday School leaned down close to my ear as she started to pray. I heard my name as her tears were falling on my hands, and it broke my heart. She then asked me to pray, and I invited Jesus into my heart. At that moment, I knew for sure that I was saved, for Jesus was now living in my heart because in Revelation 3:20, He promised to come in if I asked Him. I couldn't wait to get home to tell my family that day.

Further confirmation of my conversion came the next day in school when I confessed with my mouth that I was saved. I raised my hand in class, something that I had never done before. Miss Hall was shocked as she said, "Yes, Stephen?" and I blurted out that I wanted to tell the class something. So, with her permission, I stood up and said out loud, "Yesterday, I got saved in church. I accepted Jesus into my heart." To my surprise, the whole class clapped for me, and Miss Hall was smiling her approval.

Now, how do I know that I am saved?

Romans 10:9 – If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. (NKJV)

I believed that 68 years ago, and I have continued to believe it every day since, because the Holy Spirit tells me that I am born of God.

Do you remember when you were saved? Perhaps, it is time that you told your story as well!

Prayer: Our Father in heaven, we pause in Your presence to say thank You for the gift of salvation. Through the testimony of the Holy Spirit, the precious blood of Jesus, and Your Word, we can know that we are saved — really saved! Help us, by Your grace, to share our story of salvation. To You be all the glory. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen!

Heartfelt devotional Stephen, and a reminder to express gratitude for the occasion of “inviting Jesus into my heart.”
    Merci.

Greetings Stephen and thank you for sharing your story of the day you went forward and received salvation. It certainly is a special day in our lives to be remembered and reflected upon. Blessings for your writing.

    Hi Stephen:
It took me 25 years to understand Romans 10:9 but God finally opened my eyes.
I’m glad He did; it’s been a wonderful journey from there on.

    Good morning, Stephen,
Thank you for your touching testimony on “How Do I Know I am Saved.” It touched my heart. I too was quite young with Jesus became my friend and my saviour.

Great devotional, Stephen! I attend a denomination that doesn’t “Shout it from the mountain-tops”; so refreshing to read that your zeal has not faded!
Keep it up, dear friend, we need your “Good News!”

    Good morning
Wow! To stand up in front of your class back then! Wow.
I was born again in 1993.Best thing I ever did!!!
    God is so good.
    God bless.

Thank you, Stephen, for writing today. Your experience warmed my heart, but I confess that I did say to myself…would that happen today? I do hope my 86 years has not made me too much of a pessimist…I do know that God is in control and for those of us who are believers, we have a peace of mind that perhaps others do not have.

    Good morning, Stephen,
I appreciate that you shared your story which I am sure you have many times over the years. I don’t have a moment where I accepted Jesus with other people present. I do feel God walking with me in my faith and guiding my steps. Your passages from the Bible help to define your devotional. I am sure that your devotional will encourage others to continue to tell their story and thank God for saving us.
    Blessings.

    Dear Stephen:
Bless you for sharing this episode in your life. What a wonderful reception you received from your teacher and classmates! I’m thinking it occurred in the 50s or 60s.
I taught secondary school from the late 1970s until the mid-2010s and I fear most of my students wouldn’t have understood what you meant if you made a similar declaration these days nor would their parents.
It’s a sign of the times!
Thank you for sharing this very moving event with us!
    God bless,
    (Ontario)

Good morning, Stephen, thank you so much for your devotional. It cut me to the heart. I gave a life testimony on Sunday of what God has done for me in my life. I am a Catholic and received the gift of faith at one week old by the power of the Holy Spirit. Each of us have a different journey in life.
God works in us in different ways. If your heart is open to him, he will come and the more we desire him the more he makes himself desired. Every time I have an opportunity to tell people that God, Jesus, is the love of my life, I know he is smiling on me, his beloved child.
God bless you, my brother and thank you again so much for making me realize this morning this awesome gift of faith and that I need to nourish it and proclaim it.

Thank you so much for sharing your salvation with us. I was touched by the simplicity of your words and assured in my heart of my own salvation over 50 years ago. May God be praised!
