Listen while you read: "O Sacred Head Sore Wounded"1 (Lyrics) |
Revelation 21:5a – Then He who sat on the throne said, "Behold, I make all things new." (NKJV)
During quiet time with the Lord, I pictured in my mind the crown of thorns on Jesus' head, and heard in my spirit the words, "The day creation rejoiced."
Genesis 3:17b-18a – Cursed is the ground for your sake; In toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life. Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you. (NKJV)
I began to wonder, if it were possible, how the thorns might possibly have rejoiced, knowing that they were not originally created as thorns. I thought of how devastating it would have been for them when they were twisted into Jesus' crown of thorns. With those thoughts in mind, I wrote, "If Thorns Could Speak".
- When Adam and Eve sinned
Creation fell under sin's curse
And the thorns said to the thistles
Can things get any worse?
On Crucifixion Day
They faced even more dread
Being twisted into a crown
To be worn on Jesus' head
The crown of thorns on Jesus' head
Added to His suffering and pain
He was mocked, struck
Humiliated, and shamed
With compassion Jesus said
As blood flowed from His brow
God is allowing these things
To be so for now
I did not create you to be a thorn
You were created perfectly, beautifully
Perfect and beautiful you will
Once again be for all eternity
I came down from heaven
To earth below to destroy
The power of sin and death
Your sorrow and dread
Will be turned to great joy
After I AM crucified
Buried and risen
From the dead
The thorns rejoiced to hear this
Brothers and sisters so do we
For like Jesus we will have
A glorified body for all eternity
1 Corinthians 15:54 – So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: "Death is swallowed up in victory." (NKJV)
One day, like the thorns, all creation will rejoice, for we will be restored to the original, perfect, incorruptible state that we had before the curse of sin.
When we were in Adam, we wore the crown of sin. On the cross, Jesus wore our crown so that we would be able to wear His crown of righteousness when we receive Him as Saviour from our sins.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, we are so grateful for all that You went through at Calvary to purchase our salvation. You willingly chose to die for us, and it is our prayer and desire that we would willingly choose to live for You. We thank You that the day is coming when the lion will lie down with the lamb, creation will be restored to its original state, sickness, disease, sorrow, and death will be no more, and those of us who have received You as Saviour will be with You throughout all eternity. Thank You, Jesus! Amen.

Dear Cheryl!

I praise God for the awesome gift of His Son Jesus Christ who died on the cross for all of us. Amen!
Hi Cheryl,
I found your poem so beautiful and inspiring. I had never really thought of the thorns other than being made into a crown and violently placed on Jesus’s head.
Thank you for your contributions to PresbyCan Daily Devotionals.
Good morning, Cheryl,
I am so pleased that people share their faith on PresbyCan. I learn so much that I never would have even thought about, like the thorns. I would not have thought about how they might have felt being put on Jesus’ head. Thank you for opening my eyes to a wider perspective of who is going to rejoice one day. Blessings.
Awesome! What a great thought. Isn’t it also so beautiful that God uses the thorns to save the rabbits from predators … and thistles are so beautiful to look at … so many opposites exist in this world. Perhaps saving the rabbits was God’s ‘consolation’ to the thorns; and the beautiful purple flowers were the consolation for thistles … and the superb loving nature of ‘Down syndrome’ babies (people) … and on it goes!! Bless you for such loving and compassionate thoughts Cheryl.
AMEN! Thank you so much.
Wishing you a blessed Easter.
