Just Hang On!

One summer, two young cousins were visiting me and my husband. One adventure that we dreamed up for them was a three-day trail ride in the mountains. None of us had really ridden horses before, but the guide assured us that each of our horses, large as they seemed to us, were stable and trustworthy. We believed his words. Plodding along steadfastly, we set out for the spot where we were to spend two nights.

On the way back, things got a bit lively for me. My horse was following Jimmy, a small pack horse-in-training, that was balancing several large canvas-wrapped bundles on his back. One of these packs had worked loose, and began sliding sideways. He got spooked and leapt about skittishly. My horse reacted to this little dance and started rearing up. Some instinct caused me to hold on tight and pull on the reins with all my might. My horse calmed down, and to my relief, we were not added to the drama ahead.

Hebrews 10:23 – Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise. (NLT)

Sometimes, as we go through life with its ups and downs, all that we can do is just to hold on tightly. Lately, I went through a period where it seemed as if I were being tossed to and fro in my emotions. I felt as though I were shaken, with nothing making any sense at all. Finally, I prayed a prayer of desperation, calling for help. "Just hang on!" God answered. I realized again that God can be trusted to keep His promises, especially the one to be with us in every situation.

1 Chronicles 11:13-14 – [Eleazar, one of David's mighty warriors] was with David when the Philistines gathered for battle at Pas-dammim and attacked the Israelites in a field full of barley. The Israelite army fled, but Eleazar and David held their ground in the middle of the field and beat back the Philistines. So the Lord saved them by giving them a great victory. (NLT)

Hanging on is like holding our ground. David and Eleazar knew in Whom they believed, and so they held their ground and won against the enemy. I knew that my horse was a reliable steed, well used to mountain treks and unexpected situations. I knew that if I pulled hard enough on the reins and held on tight, I would stay on my horse. I had never had the opportunity to practice this knowledge before, but somehow, I trusted it to work. Hanging on enabled me to regain a horizontal position on solid ground. When we are grounded in God and have Him as our foundation, we can hold our ground and ultimately have the victory.

Let us make sure that we are on a solid foundation through our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. May we be purposeful, hang on, and stand our ground when the enemy of our souls wants to beat us down and defeat us with his lies.

Prayer: Thank You, Lord, that we are on a firm foundation, on solid ground, when we believe in and trust in You. Help us to purpose to stand our ground when life's circumstances or the lies of the enemy conspire to beat us down. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

Thanks for the encouraging words, Alice.

Great story and great advice, Alice. God bless!

Thank you, Alice, for this encouragement. Sometimes all we can do is hang on!

Alice, thank you for the encouraging devotional. Very appropriate for these times when new challenges in our world threaten our security. Christ is the victory.

Very nicely written Alice. Starting with your experience of riding, really drew me in and made the message all that much more powerful.
    Thanks.

Thank you, Alice, for another very positive and encouraging writing today. Following our Lord’s guidance is certainly the most “solid foundation” in our daily lives. Blessings for your special writings.

Thanks Alice. I have been in this type of situation. Have been for awhile with no end in sight. This was a word of encouragement from God, through you, to me, today.
    Blessings.

    Good morning, Alice
Thank you for another good devotional. As I went through two years of severe medical issues, with an unknown outcome at the time, I have to be honest, my solid ground shook at times. But with faith we did hang on.
    Blessings on you and yours.

    Hello Alice,
Thank you for sharing your experience with us. It truly reminded me that God is with us always, even though the circumstances we are going through are not what we were hoping for.
I am joyful that Christ is my “solid rock”, and His promises will never fail.
    God bless you.

    Dear Alice,
Thank you for your contribution today. Giving examples, gives our imagination food for thought towards the goal of this message.
It helps to strengthen our faltering faith to keep strong in the foundation of the teachings of our Lord through Jesus.
    (On)

Okay, Alice. What you said today was directly for me. (No doubt for many others too). The reference to David and his battle really makes sense and I even identify with the horses (On whom, at one point in my life, we would’ve had to ride back and forth to school over some narrow passages in the mountains. We left before that necessity arose).
At any rate, I REALLY needed to hear your inspired message.

    Good morning, Alice,
I do know that feeling of “just hang on” and things will get better. That is when Jesus is carrying me because there have been times in my life when I needed that. It is so true if you keep putting one foot in front of the other, you will get there with God’s help.
I am glad that you and your husband were willing to try something different to give your cousins an adventure and that it all worked out. It is not easy to trust in God, but when we do each time builds our faith for the next time. Thank you for sharing your experience which clearly shines your faith into this world. May you continue to “hang on” to God as you walk with Him. Blessings.
