The Up Side

Listen while you read: "Dear Lord And Father Of Mankind"1 (Lyrics)

Psalm 32:7 – You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance. (NIV)

A favourite game in our house is hide and seek. The girls just love it and want to play it regularly. They never seem to get tired of discovering me, tucked into a large dog kennel or behind the hot water tank. They never weary of my finding them either, as their shrieks of delight echo throughout the house.

The downside of this game is that there are limited places to hide in an open concept home. The upside is that the girls don't care. It is the fun of seeking one another that delights them.

Similarly, God delights in finding us, when we run and hide within His love during the downsides of life, those difficult times of stress and pain, confusion and uncertainty, when the world is just too much for us to bear, and we need to get away from it all, by seeking solace in Him.

And in Him, we find it, for the upside of our situation is that God does not ignore us in our hiding place. He comes to us and protects us. He shows us the best way to proceed, and He comforts and renews us as He reminds us of His love, kindness, mercy, and forgiveness. According to today's verse, He surrounds us with His songs of deliverance concerning whatever situation we may find ourselves hiding from.

In fact, He goes on to state, "I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you." (Psalm 32:8 NIV)

These are words that cause my heart to echo with hope and encouragement, for they remind me that He sees me and never wearies of seeking me out within my hiding place in Him.

Today, if you find yourself on the downside of the game of life and need to run away and hide, even for a little while, run and hide in Him, for He will seek you out and with delight and joy instruct you in the best way to proceed back to the upside of life.

Prayer: Father God, thank You that You are our hiding place, and that You protect us from trouble. Thank You for surrounding us with songs of deliverance, for instructing us and teaching us in the way that we should go, and for counselling us and watching over us. Indeed, You are a good God in Whom our hearts delight. In Christ's name, we pray. Amen.

    Thank you.

Amen, Lynne, may we shelter within God’s will. Blessings.

Thank you, Lynne, for this encouraging devotional. The song from that scripture is one if my favorites.

    Dear Lynne,
What joy with your grandkids that you write wonderful spiritual life lessons.

    Morning Lynne,
Today’s devotional should be a part of a book of devotionals.
    Thank you.

Thanks Lynne! As I was reading this, I thought about our new youth group and how this would make a great lesson for them on God’s love and compassion. God bless!

Thanks Lynne. This is right on how I’m feeling this morning, and all week: it is a great help. I always look forward to your uplifting, full of hope, devotionals. Blessings.

    Good morning, Lynn,
God is our hiding place indeed, and he is calling for us to come to Him at all times, if only people would listen.
Thank you for those good words.

    Dear Lynne,
Many thanks for another of your very special devotionals. You do such a great way of weaving delightful times with your little ones into an example of the Lord’s love and care in watching over us. Blessings for these writings you create and may you continue having joyous “hide and seek” times with your little grandchildren.

    Hello Lynne,
Thank you for today’s message from one who is ready to “run away”! I don’t want to run away from God, of course, but the rest of the world – especially the computer – I can do without right now. I love your messages.
    With God’s blessings on you,

    Good morning, Lynne,
I am amazed at what God provided in your message this morning. This is sweetness to my heart. I have saved different messages during this past three months and yours hit it out of the park!
Thank you for your insight and your following God’s promptings as you write your devotionals. He is good and has provided for the tears of my heart. You are a part of that blessing!!

    Hi Lynne
Children are a true blessing and show us the miracle of God in their laughter and joy which they show in the simple games of life which they so love to play.
Yes, God delights in us especially when we hide in His love. He is always there to nurture us and help us to enjoy His presence and His love.
Even when we are in pain and discomfort we can rest in God’s love and presence, knowing that we are precious in His sight.
May the Lord bless you and your family tonight and always.

    Good morning, Lynne,
I really like your concept of hiding “within God” and not hiding from God. I think I have the tendency when I am not on the “up side” to hide from God because I am not doing his will. I don’t think that if I hide within God that he will seek me and provide the solace and comfort that I need to move forward. It is that old habit of my will and feeling that I can get myself out of the “down side”.
Thank you for providing me a different way of looking at this habit and the great prayer to guide me.

Bless you Lynne for this timely reminder, (once again).

    Hello Lynne,
Thank you for sharing your story “the up side” in the PresbyCan devotionals.
Here are my thoughts: Amen. Thanks be to God. Amen.
