A Psalm Of Praise

Many find the book of Psalms in the Bible to be a source of comfort and encouragement. In fact, it is probably the most widely read book of the Bible. Jesus quoted from the Psalms more often than any other Scripture.

The Psalms express the deepest feelings of the hearts of those who wrote them, whether they were complaining or praising God — drawing those who read them closer to God and giving them peace.

In one of our Bible studies, we were encouraged to write our own psalm. This is what I wrote:

For as long as I can remember,
God has been a part of my life.
I will praise Him forever and ever,
Because He has been so faithful to me.
    My God is forever faithful.

He gives me strength when I am weak,
He comforts me when I am sad.
He speaks to me through His Word,
He rescues me from my sinful ways.
    My God is forever faithful.

    He meets my every need,
My God is great and worthy to be praised.
    There is none like Him,
As long as I live, I will praise my God.
    My God is forever faithful.

He is the One Who formed me in my mother's womb,
He is the One Who has called me
Out of darkness into His marvellous light.
He is the One Who will never leave me nor forsake me,
He is the One in Whom I put my trust.
    My God is forever faithful.

My God is full of compassion,
    His mercy endures forever.
How great and awesome is His love
For such a one as me.
    My God is forever faithful.

Colossians 3:16 – Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts. (NLT)

Ephesians 5:18b-19 – Be filled with the Holy Spirit, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts. (NLT)

"The more deeply we grow into the psalms and the more often we pray them as our own, the more simple and rich will our prayer become." – Dietrich Bonhoeffer

"The most valuable thing the Psalms do for me is to express the same delight in God which made David dance." – C.S. Lewis

Perhaps you would like to write your own psalm?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You so much for Your Word and how it speaks to us, offering us comfort and encouragement, and showing us how to praise You for Who You are and for all the ways that You are working in our lives. Thank You that You hear us when we call out to You in difficult circumstances. Thank You that we can speak to You in psalms of praise. Thank You that You are forever faithful. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

    Good morning Dee
Very good devotional this morning, I have never tried to write a Psalm, might have to give it a try sometime.

Thank you for your devotional and psalm. A few years ago, I started reading 5 Psalms and 1 Proverb every day. Thank you for the scriptural references you give and for your psalm. Blessings.

    Dear Dee,
What a lovely psalm you have written. I love that you wrote “My God is ever Faithful” at the end of each stanza. What a nice suggestion to write our own psalm. I think I will.

    Dear Dee,
What a beautiful psalm you wrote – an inspiration to me. Your devotional is encouraging and gives us lots to think about and reflect on. Thank you for sharing part of your personal journey.

Thank you, Dee, for that beautiful Psalm.

    Dear Dee:
Thank you for writing your Psalm and sharing it with us. About two weeks ago one of our parishioners (whom I have never met) reached out to our prayer team. I suggested she read the Psalms for comfort and encouragement. I shared your devotional with her this morning in hopes it will help her.
God Bless you Dee for sharing your gift of writing that our Lord has given you.

Hello Dee. I am sure we have never met but I just finished reading your Psalm in the Presbyterian Church’s daily devotional. It truly spoke to my heart and said so many things I wish I could put into words. I am a Presbyterian pastor, now retired but still helping out in churches between ministers or to cover holidays. I would love to share your psalm some time when I am leading worship. I would certainly cite you as the author.
Thank you again for making my day.

    Wonderful writing!

Your hymn of praise helps me today, Dee.

    What a great idea.
    Will try it.

    Good morning Dee.
Just read your devotion. Your Psalm is incredibly beautiful and powerful. That is a keeper. I have printed it and am putting it in my office.
    Many thanks and blessings.

Thank you, Dee, for your creative writing to share with many. The Lord sure helped you as He led you in your writing. The one thing I would have included are His Promises that are so special to me. I am often thanking and praising Him for the way I am aware of a promise kept. I will look forward to more of your writing and blessing us.

Thank you for sharing that beautiful work.
