Listen while you read: "How Firm A Foundation"1 (Lyrics) |
Jeremiah 33:3a – Call to me and I will answer you. (RSV)
In most of the emails that I have sent out to friends or strangers during this time when the COVID-19 virus has been rampaging in the world, I have requested that people pray to God for success for scientists who are striving to develop medication, serum, or injection to counter the virus.
It is a trying time that we are living in. We very much need our God to help us.
The grand old hymn beginning with How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord," continues:
- Fear not, I am with thee; O be not dismayed!
I, I am thy God, and will still give thee aid;
I'll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand,
Upheld by My righteous omnipotent hand.
When through the deep waters I call thee to go,
The rivers of woe shall not thee overflow;
For I will be with thee, thy troubles to bless,
And sanctify to thee thy deepest distress.
When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie,
My grace, all-sufficient, shall be thy supply:
The flames shall not hurt thee; I only design
Thy dross to consume, and thy gold to refine.
The soul that on Jesus hath leaned for repose
I will not — I will not desert to His foes.
That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake,
I'll never — no never — no, never forsake!
We can trust God and obey Him as Abraham did:
Hebrews 11:8-9 – By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place which he was to receive as an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was to go. By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise.
Just as God was with Abraham, so Jesus promises us, "Lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age." (Matthew 28:20b)
So, we can echo, "The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid" (Hebrews 13:6), and add, "We have no help to compare with Yours, so we love You, our Father God."
Prayer: Lord God, cause that we will so trust You that we will not be afraid, for we see You as Helper through the ages, and as our Helper now. Cause us to depend on You and call upon You for Your help for the days in which we live, for we know that You love us and care. Amen.

Thank you, Isabel. These are 2 great scriptures and mighty song.
Amen Isabel. Thanks for a good word today.
Blessings.
Thank you, Isabel. It is no coincidence that this is the hymn on which I have been leaning ever since March. Thanks for the reminder.
Good Morning Isabel,
Good devotional this morning, one of my favorite hymns.
Blessings.
Amen, Isabel. Another hymn that comes to mind is “Trust and obey for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey…” Thanks for sharing this encouraging devotional with us. Blessings.
Hi Isabel,
It was so nice to see your name again. I very much appreciated your devotional on PresbyCan. I hope you haven’t gotten the same kind of backlash I’ve been getting anytime I mention the word “Vaccine” or “mask”, etc.
Thank you for your devotional. We haven’t sung that hymn for some time and thank you for reminding us of its message. We need to claim their messages and sing them meaningfully. Jer. 33:3 has also been called God’s telephone number. Keep on writing those devotionals.
Dear Isabel,
Thank you very much for today’s devotional reminding us that God is always with us. Let us pray especially for our school children who will be going back to school in September, their teachers, caregivers, and school bus drivers, that they remain safe under His wings.
Blessings.
Greetings Isabel,
Thank you for writing today. It truly is important that we thank our Lord for watching over us and that He is ever ready to carry us through whatever situation we must face. Trust in our awesome Lord gives us comfort and peace in these very unusual days.
Blessings,
(B.C.)
Great message Isabel.
And much needed.
