Songs Of Creation

1 Chronicles 16:32 – Let the sea resound, and all that is in it; let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them! (NIV)

Luke 19:39-40 – Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, "Teacher, rebuke your disciples!" "I tell you," he replied, "if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out." (NIV)

Recently, I watched a wonderful video presentation by Louie Giglio, pastor of Passion City Church in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. His message clearly demonstrated how nature itself, from the heavens to the great deep, is literally singing praise to God.

By way of illustration, he played radio signals emitted by stars in a pattern of musical notes. When this celestial music is superimposed with the songs of the blue whale, the largest animal in the world, it blends perfectly with a contemporary Christian song entitled, "How Great is Our God," by Chris Tomlin.

Significantly, in the animal kingdom, whales are not alone in singing songs of praise to their Maker. Several years ago, one musician experimented with recording two tracks of cricket voices: a slowed-down version, and another, unaltered. It was observed that when these tapes were played simultaneously, it sounded like an angelic choir!

Still another of nature's most beloved praise singers is the songbird. In a paper published in Royal Society Open Science, an international team of scientists did a detailed analysis of numerous bird sounds. The data proved that many types of birds exhibit remarkable human-like principles in their songs, causing some composers to take serious notice.

From sea monsters to tiny insects, the whole world is involved in singing His praise. Imagine the worship chorus depicted in the following text:

Psalm 148:1,7,10-13

Praise the Lord from the heavens;
       praise him in the heights above.
Praise the Lord from the earth,
       you great sea creatures and all ocean depths,
wild animals and all cattle,
       small creatures and flying birds,
kings of the earth and all nations,
       you princes and all rulers on earth,
young men and women,
       old men and children.
Let them praise the name of the Lord,
       for his name alone is exalted;
       his splendor is above the earth and the heavens. (NIV)

One by one, each part of creation adds its voice. By God's grace, we, too, are members of His universal choir.

Keeping these thoughts in mind, let us appreciate more fully the marvellous wonders of all that He has made, while at the same time reflecting on Jesus' words in today's Scripture: Do the stones really need to cry out?

Prayer: Father, we thank You for songs of praise in the heavens, on the land, and in the sea; for the testimony of all creation that constantly bears witness to Your power and great glory. Open our minds and hearts to experience more of Your beauty and splendour by giving praise to You always in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, for in Him all things were created, things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible. Amen.
