A Covenant Of Peace

Listen to this devotional:
Listen while you read: "Saviour Like A Shepherd Lead Us"1 (Lyrics)

Isaiah 11:6 – In that day the wolf and the lamb will live together; the leopard will lie down with the baby goat. The calf and the yearling will be safe with the lion, and a little child will lead them all. (NLT)

Hosea 2:18 – In that day I will also make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field, the birds of the sky and the creeping things of the ground. And I will abolish the bow, the sword, and war from the land, and will make them lie down in safety. (NASB)

In my Bible study group, someone relayed an amazing true story that had been circulating over the Internet. A photographer, while visiting Botswana's Central Kalahari Game Reserve in Southern Africa, captured on film a family of lions as they approached an injured baby fox. Surprisingly, the mother lioness seemed curious but did not harm the young animal; the report also stated that she later protected him from the threat of a hungry male lion.

As soon as I heard this story, today's Scriptures came to mind. I pondered the idea that God will one day make a covenant of peace with animals as well as people. This, I thought, must be necessary for a paradise environment to ensure the health and safety of all living things. The earth would return to its original design — as it was in the Garden of Eden.

More than likely, you, too, have heard similar accounts of unusual relationships between predator and prey. Stories of peace and friendship in the wild may remind us of our Lord's future reign and the inspiring words that He taught His disciples to pray: "Thy kingdom come."

For believers, such real-life testimonies can make interesting conversation starters. They also provide opportunities for sharing our faith in the prophetic promises revealed to us throughout the Bible. Like a modern-day parable, this may prove an effective way to communicate the gospel, demonstrating a message of peace and the ultimate hope for a better world.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, we thank You that there is a new day coming when the earth shall be full of Your glory, even as the waters cover the sea. Give us a vision of hope to see paradise restored, the wolf lying down with the lamb, and the sorrows of this world transformed into joy. In Jesus' precious name, we pray. Amen.
