Darkness Without God

Listen to this devotional:
Listen while you read: "Little Drops Of Water"1 (Lyrics)

As I look out my window this morning, it is terribly dark, and it is raining buckets. Where is the sun? Lord, why do I feel such darkness? I put the television on and hear about a typhoon storming down on Hawaii and a hurricane coming towards the Florida coast. I recall many hurricanes in my childhood years in Bermuda.

What would it be like to constantly live in darkness — the kind of life without God being present? Does darkness of the spirit describe our society these days? For a Christian, what does spiritual darkness mean? Does it say something to us about being bereft of God's light? If I were to contemplate my life lived in eternal darkness, I would be very uncomfortable, even scared to get up and face the day!

What does the Bible say? I find this encouraging:

1 Peter 2:9 – But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. (NIV 2011)

Let us listen carefully to that verse and take courage when facing the darkness around us. Our future here on earth may be dark and full of storms, but He has chosen you and me and calls us into His light — we are His through our faith in His Son Jesus Christ. There is no need to fear the future. Even if the earth becomes dark and void of faith in God, the Lord will keep His people safely in His light.

As I look around these days, I wonder what the future will be like. We may well fear darkness and find our days discouraging, but the Lord has control of our lives as we believe in Him. In Him, we are safe, living in His light. Yes, we may fear the future, expecting storms and wars, but the Lord is in control.

It is true that our world seems darker now. Watching television news these days can be very discouraging. Yes, I trust in the Lord and talk with Him every day as I read these devotionals, but recently, as my foot swells and I have trouble walking, I ask myself what does my future hold? Will I need a walker, or will I land in a wheelchair someday? Do I worry about such an outcome? Not really, because the Lord knows my future, and I can trust Him. Where there is darkness from worry and fear, we can turn it over to the Lord.

Let's you and I talk this over with the Lord.

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You for Your light that overcomes our fear of darkness. We believe in the light that Jesus brought into the world. He knew great darkness as death circled round Him on the cross. Resurrection light continually beckons us in faith and trust. We join together and give our lives into Your safekeeping, O Lord. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

    Dear Iris
Just to say thank you for this mornings beautiful message.
I hope that your foot is not swollen today.
    God bless.

Your are absolutely right Iris; we all lose sight of God’s plan for us in the dark days. But even in the darkness we hold to His promise that we are in His care and He has everything under control. Thank you for your devotionals; I can always relate to them. Blessings.

    Dear Iris:
Oh, you are so right and His word is a lamp onto our feet.. God Bless You Iris. I pray your foot will heal and that God will remove all the swelling. We live His peace. Praise the Lord!

Thank you soooo much for the Devotional on ‘darkness’, it lifted my soul out of the ‘dark night of the soul’ and made me realize God will get me through the the future. I’m a Christian and think I shouldn’t feel this way and afraid to admit it to anyone because I’m a believer. I’m so glad that God doesn’t give up even when we can’t feel His presence in times of depression.

Incredible how the Lord prepared me to need this message this very morning. And to need your ever so gentle voice, Iris. What a comfort He is, what a wonder that He can use you, where you are, to make such a difference to me where I am. Thank you for being so faithful in your device to Him. Thank you Lord for being such a help to those who are seeking your help to overcome lifelong fears; fears that began in childhood and can’t be understood so many years later; fears that need to be renounced or rejected or healed – or faced? Whatever it is that one does with fears that defy our own efforts at control and objectivity!
Blessings on you Iris, and on your health and your future.

Hello Iris, Wow how true of today, that this world is in it’s dark days and it’s time to WAKE UP and see the light the Lord brings to us and Hope, Joy, Peace and Love that is brought out to us by Our Savior Jesus Christ to which we will be preparing ourselves for in the Celebration of Christmas. The dull grey and wet days we have been experiencing lately here, one looks out and feels trapped inside, while thinking is this ever going to change, but to look at the Bigger Picture of what’s happening in this world today, we wonder if changes will be made there in bringing Wars to a end and giving Peace a new beginning. The Sunshine is there for our taking in Jesus Christ, if we only except him, as he is there for us.
Peace be with you and the Love of Christ watch over you. You are a true servant of Christ.
