Recently, I watched an interesting movie that brought back memories of a certain kind of pop art. The film portrayed the true story of "Big Eyes" artist, Margret Keane, who was famous in the 1960s and '70s. Her paintings depicted sorrowful images of waif boys and girls with strikingly large, saucer-like eyes. "The eyes I draw on my children are an expression of my own deepest feelings," she said. "Eyes are windows of the soul."

Contemplating this old proverb, I was reminded of what Jesus said:

Luke 11:34 – Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light, but when it is bad, your body is full of darkness. (ESV)

But instead of windows, Jesus compares our eyes to lamps. Just as a lamp illuminates where we're going and what we're doing, our eyes function in a similar manner. Yet, Jesus is not referring to physical sight; rather, He's talking about spiritual perception.

When we look at the world through the light of God's Word, our eyes are healthy, as His light is reflected in our character. If our vision is poor, it is because we lack understanding of the Scriptures. This will have a negative effect on our lives.

Consider that God is our Master artist. He desires to draw images, not of lonely orphaned children, but of hope and joy on the face of His people, an expression of His own deepest feelings and amazing love for us. Consequently, if eyes are truly windows of the soul, how do they reveal Christ living in you?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, open the eyes of our hearts and allow the brightness of Your glory to shine through the windows of our souls. May our lives reflect the beauty of Your Son, Jesus Christ, in Whose holy name, we pray. Amen.
