Luke 21:25,28 – Then there will be strange events in the skies — warnings, evil omens and portents in the sun, moon and stars; and down here on earth the nations will be in turmoil, perplexed by the roaring seas and strange tides. So when all these things begin to happen, stand straight and look up! For your salvation is near. (TLB)
In the past few years, people all over the world have heard mysterious noises: a groaning, scraping, rumbling noise, or that of a long trumpet blast — not the modern trumpet that we're familiar with today, but like a ram's horn, or shofar, which was blown in biblical times to sound a warning to the people. Scientists explain the sounds as magnetic waves or a hoax. Search YouTube for "strange sounds in the sky" and hear them for yourself.
Combine these sounds with weather phenomena, meteors, and crazy cloud formations, as well as the general civil unrest all over the world, and Christians and non-believers alike are beginning to laugh sheepishly and wonder if these are the signs that the Bible warns about, the signs of the end times.
Jesus advised us to be prepared and to keep a constant watch, but not to panic. Christians have nothing to fear. Though we may be persecuted, we are protected. We understand that this world cannot go on as it is. God has to intervene. But He has prepared a place for us, and He is our Saviour. God is in control.
The Bible is full of strange happenings. We see God at work around us every day, and we've all seen miracles, big and small. Instead of worrying about the future of the world, or simply brushing off unusual events, let's meditate on them and pray for wisdom. Let us be careful about the Word of God and carry it in our heart.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, You gave us all that we need to know in the Bible. Your Word applies to all times and all cultures. We ask for discernment when we hear of unusual events in the world. Give us ears to hear, Lord, and the wisdom to know what comes from You. Help us to be faithful and ready for Your return. Amen.
