I had to get a new driver's license with a new photo this year. After the new license arrived in the mail, as I was destroying the old one, with each new cut of the old card I kept thinking about the old being replaced by the new. As I watched the old picture disappear with each new snip of the scissors, I thought of how we, as Christians, lose our old selves and become new creations when we give our lives to the Lord Jesus Christ. This Scripture came to mind:
2 Corinthians 5:17 – So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! (NRSV)
My new driver's license is good for five years. On the other hand, we have to be continuously renewing our old selves and keep yielding daily to God's will in our lives. We can't wait for five years, five days, or even five minutes. We should always be striving to be the people that God created us to be. As Paul says:
Philippians 3:12b-14 – I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. (NIV 2011)
Throughout our lives, we will experience new things, but our God never changes, and He is always with us, every step of the way.
The following words by Sydney Carter say it well:
- One more step along the world I go.
One more step along the world I go;
From the old things to the new
Keep me traveling along with You.
And it's from the old I travel to the new.
Keep me traveling along with You.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, we thank You that no matter where our Christian journey takes us, You are always travelling along with us. Thank You for giving us new life. May we always seek to live our lives in a way that is pleasing to You. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

Good reminder Dee. Thanks for writing.
Lovely devotional today Dee. Thanks for sharing.
Dee
Good to hear from you and to take in the words about growing with God each day of our lives. God bless.
Good morning, Dee,
Thanks for your devotional. I have just gone through the process of securing a new passport and all the photos and paperwork that entails along with having to get a photo health card (I have been using the old one sans photo). It does give one pause for theological reflection and I was so happy to receive yours this morning. Thanks again, and I pray you have a wonderful day full of grace!
Good Morning Dee, and Thank you for today’s devotional. Interesting analogy. And also interesting that in Ontario you get to keep your old license with your photo on until your new one arrives. Here in BC, we have to turn them in and receive a temporary license on a piece of paper…..with no photo of course, until our new ones arrive. So I guess you could say our “identity” or old self is changed twice before being “renewed”.
Hi Dee:
A great message, my husband preached a wonderful sermon on the transformation in the life of Paul, stressing the fact that, even though Paul ‘s outer appearance remained the same, how different his entire presentation and outlook on life would be because of his marvelous conversion. God is truly awesome and I say awesome with great respect and realization concerning the fact He alone was the creator of our universe and all within.
May we all strive to fulfill the beautiful words of the scripture you alluted to: Philippians 3:12b-14,
A beautiful message.
Dear Dee;
Thank you for your devotional. Amen to your prayer.
Dear Dee,
A very good illustration, Dee. The cut up old drivers’ license you used to bring out truths about change. We live in a changing world. And we are forever changing people.
I pray that you, God, will guide and control our changing political and personal world, and our many peoples of the world as they change. Please cause our changes to be from truth to truth, from being close to God to being closer. And please cause that people will adopt, and retain, and spread Godly philosophies of faith in You our supreme Lord. And I ask that the youth of today will be brought up in the love and nourishment and admonition of our Lord and in schools that teach that you exist and care and that center in You and your Son as our redeemer and guide. Lord bless teachers with deep knowledge of your love and salvation and the passion to be instruments on the Christianization of the world for your sake. Amen.
Keep growing in Jesus Christ, and writing.
