Embracing The Cross

1 Corinthians 1:18 – For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. (NIV)

My friend, who works as a dispatcher for the police department, has experienced just about every circumstance one can imagine. One story that she shared recently had a profound effect on both of us. Caught on film was a possum trapped inside a deep hole at a local skateboard park. The police watched via a video monitor as someone lowered a wooden pole for the animal to climb out. At first, the possum walked away, cowering behind it. Later, after hesitating some more, it grasped hold of the object that would save its life.

My friend and I saw the same spiritual picture. The wooden pole reminded us of the cross of Christ; the possum stood for people, who, for whatever reason, hesitate to embrace it, for the forgiveness of their sins. Yet, it also speaks of believers who sometimes feel that there is no way out when faced with a difficult situation, but the cross of Christ has already provided the victory. All we need to do is surrender and take hold of it.

Therefore, let us consider the message of the cross and how it has affected our lives. Let us never hesitate to embrace it, allowing the power of the risen Christ to set us free.

Prayer: Thank You, dear God our Father, for the cross and all that it means to us. May we so trust and live in the power of Christ's salvation. In His holy name, we pray. Amen.

    Oh yes-embrace!!

Thanks Lori. That was a good comparison.

A refreshing reminder Lori. Thanks for sharing.

    Great example Lori!
    Blessings.

Short and sweet but full of dynamite.
    God bless.

Thank you. Lori, for your very wonderful reminder of power of the Cross.
    Every blessing on your day.

God always amazes us with His creative communication of the way of salvation, even using the rescue of a trapped possum to help us understand. Thank you for hearing and sharing His message to us. Blessings.

What a wonderful message. Amen to your prayer. May we all be ever more willing to surrender to our dear Lord, who loves us more than we can imagine and is yearning for us to trust Him with our lives … for our GOOD, not so that He can control us.

My, my, my, Lori, what a simile that so describes millions of humans of today. I read your Devotional subject again and said to myself, “Don’t try to add to that. Lori’s thought speaks for itself.” Thank you very much. I’m passing that on!

Lori – Thanks for sharing this experience. You always seem to see things in everyday life to show us how they are of great spiritual significance. What a beautiful picture of how the cross is noted in scripture as being a stumbling block, yet it is what brings us salvation. God bless you.

    Dear Lori,
Thank you for your message culminating in:
Therefore, let us consider the message of the cross and how it has affected our lives. Let us never hesitate to embrace it, allowing the power of the risen Christ to set us free.
    Keep writing.

    Hi Lori,
The devotional today made me smile. There is such a difference in the way I view various animals since moving to the country. In the city those animals such as the possum, raccoon, etc., are such a rare sight. Out here we see them all the time. I will admit that the armadillo is one that we would gladly send to Pennsylvania, BUT, you wouldn’t want it!!!!
Thanks for the story and your devotional.

Lori, I like the way you depicted the possum with the cross of Jesus. I know how you feel about all animals too. Good job.

Oh Lori. I loved every bit of this. And thought it was a perfect thing to relearn. Then I saw your name. You do so good. And always speak to me.

    Hi Lori:
What a beautiful message assuring us that the way of the cross and our taking hold of it, in faith, will certainly lead us to a beautiful home Christ has gone to prepare for us who seek forgiveness and accept His unconditional love and forgiveness. May we never forget there is Victory in Jesus when we truly believe. This message was a great teaching message, challenging us to reach out and Christ will be there.

Hi Lori, Isn’t it amazing how God uses ordinary everyday situations to speak to our minds about His truths?
This is a good confirmation for me.
    Thanks.
