The Message

Listen while you read: "Father We Thank Thee"1 (Lyrics)

Our sons entered into a contract with a radio station to advertise their computer business. When they met with the salesperson to go over what they wanted in the ad, he reminded them that it was to be no longer than thirty seconds. Thirty seconds sounded like a long enough time, until they went back to the office and began to craft what they wanted in the ad. They needed to mention the company name three times with their phone number and website, as well as what they were offering for service, all in under thirty seconds.

The message that I wanted them to share was from a mother's perspective: how nice and how good my sons are. But the message needed to state facts that would prompt people to want more information in regard to their computers. As we found out through this process, thirty seconds goes very fast.

What if we had only thirty seconds to witness about Jesus and let people know what He has done for us and why people need Him? Would we share what He has done in our lives, or would we share Scripture, like this famous verse?

John 3:16 – For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (NIV)

The Lord also spoke to me about the message that I can inadvertently give to people in a lot less than thirty seconds by casting a careless word to someone, or by not taking the time to lend an ear and just listen, or by being too busy to just give a smile or a bit of my time.

The message of Jesus to us is, "Come to Me; seek Me, rest in Me." To get this across to the world is our mandate.

Matthew 4:19 – "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." (NIV)

Luke 12:31 – "But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well." (NIV)

Matthew 11:28 – "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." (NIV)

Prayer: Dear heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word as reference for sharing Your message. You are our guiding light, and we can trust You to give us what we need when we need it for others. Lord, help us to keep in the Word and to confess our sins to You. Help us to use our time wisely and to walk closely with You at all times. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

Thanks for sharing Julie. A very timely word.

Thanks Julie for your words today – precious!

This is really good and makes one think. Thirty seconds? Wow! I’ll remember this devotional. Thanks for sharing.

Interesting analogy Julie. Thank you! It resonates with me, as one of the best jobs I had was copy-writing commercials for our radio station… 15 seconds, 30 seconds or 60 seconds. You are so right, a lot of good or harm can be done with words spoken in those few seconds.

    Dear Julie Boles,
This is a REAL devotional. Thank you so much for sharing it, and for challenging us to speak out the life-giving news of Jesus Christ. And thank you for helping us to focus at the same time on what is essential to convey in a brief time of opportunity.
May God keep you contributing to PresbyCan and the World. “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation” (Mark 16:15).
I pray for God’s best for you and yours.
    Amen.

    Dear Julie,
I really enjoy your story “The Message”.
    Thank you.
