John 10:10b – I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. (NIV)
The brilliant mix of reds, oranges, and yellows silhouetted against the blue background of the sky almost takes my breath away. Our heavenly Father, the Great Artist, has splashed a panorama of colours across the canvas of His creation, and as I try to take in the beauty while walking down the trail with my dog, He brings many new, wonderful thoughts to my mind.
This season is a both a celebration of the life that is and a promise of the life to come, for surely heaven could not be less beautiful. Yet, despite the beauty, there is a tinge of sadness, for it is the autumn of the year, and there must be a time of waiting before we will experience the new life to come.
Yes, it is the autumn of the year, and I am reminded that I, too, am in the autumn of my years. It seems that God in His great love saves this beauty to the last part of our year to encourage us. The bright green of the summer leaves has given way to the underlying colours of autumn, and the leaves are celebrating the life that they have lived. Now, they are being prepared for their winter sleep.
I realize that it is in living our "summer years" that we share the life that the Father has given to us, using our various skills and talents to follow the purpose that He has planned for each of our lives. And finally, it is in dying that we complete that purpose and rise to new life in Him: life eternal.
When talking to a complaining Martha, who was berating Jesus for not being there to heal her brother, Lazarus, Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?" (John 11:25-26 NIV)
He asks each one of us the same question today as He works on the master canvas of each of our lives: "Do you believe this?"
A unique kind of joy and peace settled over my entire being because I could say with confidence, "Yes, Lord, I believe!"
As I continued on my walk, His thoughts continued to stream through my mind. Just as the seasons of life on this earth are all part of My plan and each has its purpose, so are the seasons of your life, and each has its purpose. So live that you may fulfill My purpose for you, and take each day and all it has to offer, and live it to My glory, even as the beauty of this autumn season glorifies Me.
Prayer: Thank You, Father, for Your wonderful resurrection plan in Christ Jesus, our Saviour, when we, Your children, will gather around Your throne to worship, praise, and glorify You in all of Your beauty. And as our autumn season nears its end, we have His wonderful promise, "Yes, I am coming soon." Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. (Revelation 22:20b NIV)
