Giant Knees

Genesis 1:1 – In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. (NIV)

Taking my usual health walk one day, I took a rest on a park bench before continuing my effort.

So it was that the tiniest of tiny bugs flew to rest on my knee. With my poor vision, how I even noticed the speck is a puzzle. But there it was, in no hurry to fly away, giving me time to marvel at the amazing, puzzling wonder of all God's creatures. I thought that the bug must have seen my knee as a giant landing field to drop in on. Where it had come from and where it was going remain unknown to me. Nevertheless, I was thankful for an insight into the things of God!

I spoke to the fly in silence: Look at you! God made you on the fifth day of creation! God made human beings on the sixth! And God saw that it was all very good!

At the same time as I was thinking of the creation story, a bug was crossing over my shoe to the other side. A little further away, a large ant was quickly running off and disappearing into a flower bed. I felt like a giant among the tiny life around me.

Isn't that how God might be pictured — like a giant whose knees can hold all His creatures? Think of the loving relationship that He desires with us humans. His hands can hug us and care for us when we come for shelter and cover. We are free to land on His lap at any time, at any place, with an ongoing welcome, to pray, to worship, to praise, to trust and obey, to glorify God!

John 1:1-4 – In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. (NIV)

Although God saw that His creation was in good order, sin soon spoiled it. But His love would bring many to His arms through Jesus, who came to live with us and die for us, giving His life as a payment for our sin. Today, the Christ, the Son of God, the risen Redeemer, is the life — salvation — and God, the Almighty, calls His beloved before Him who first loved us.

Prayer: Jesus the Christ, through You, we and all things have been made. You became flesh from heaven to dwell on earth. You rose from death and sit at the right hand of God the Father. You reign in majesty and glory over all that You have made. From the fullness of Your love and grace, the undeserved have received pardon and have been blessed to be born of You! We praise Your name! Amen!
