The God Particle

Perhaps you caught the excited buzz from the world of nuclear physics when researchers announced that they had detected the subatomic particle named the Higgs boson. Its nickname is "The God Particle". More than forty years ago, the Higgs field was theorized as pervading everything, even otherwise empty space, proposed as the basic building block of the universe, a crucial mechanism by which elementary particles acquire mass and energy. Finding the Higgs boson — the smallest possible excitation of the Higgs field — was described as a crucial test of the theory, yet for a long time proved elusive, since its existence is so fleeting. Higgs boson: "The God Particle".

The topic of "The God Particle" got me thinking. What is crucial for us to be able to stay in fellowship with our Creator?

These Scriptures came to mind as I considered what gives mass and energy to followers of Christ:

Romans 4:3b – Abraham believed in (trusted in) God, and it was credited to his account as righteousness (right living and right standing with God). (AMP)

Romans 4:18-22 – Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, "So shall your offspring be." Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead — since he was about a hundred years old — and Sarah's womb was also dead. Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised. This is why "it was credited to him as righteousness." (NIV)

Contrary to the available evidence, Abraham chose to hope, trust, rely on, and believe in the vision of what God promised. He leaned on the Almighty's power to supersede nature.

To give glory means to recognize the influence or "weight" of another. In faithful belief, Abraham praised, worshipped, and gave credit to God, whose power would supply him with a biological heir before Isaac was conceived.

"The God Particle" that permits us to stick with God is faith, trust, belief, and reliance on His kindness for us. His kindness is demonstrated in Jesus and His work of redemption. We respond to it with worship accompanied by loving action. God, in turn, counts our faith as righteousness — right living and right standing with Him.

Isn't it amazing how so much can depend on one simple but not easy thing? Teams of particle physicists worked for almost forty years to be able to detect the Higgs boson. Disbelieving our fears while giving glory to our Creator seems crazy, yet pans out in the end, when we worship, praise, and love in the assurance of God's over-riding kindness that brings His best in the end.

Prayer: Father in heaven, in the name of Christ Jesus our Saviour, we ask to fellowship with You in the same way as faithful Abraham. Give us vision so that we can stick with You, do Your will, and see dreams of Your kingdom come true. Amen.
