Psalm 92:1 – It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to the Most High. (NLT)

Recently, we have been recalling the great earthquake in Haiti that caught the eyes and the ears of the world two years ago. At the time, one of the moving images on the television screen that captivated my attention concerned the human response to the earthquake destruction. One woman dominated a particular scene as she trudged forward through the destruction and devastation, the chaos and rubble around her, with a song springing forth from her heart and her lips. Perhaps she had lost all her possessions through these great quakes, but she was a woman of courage and faith. She offered what she had left to the world around her. As she struggled through the rubble, she offered a song to lift the hearts of all those who might hear. Expressed in a magnificent song of courage, she bore a powerful witness to the beauty and strength possible in the midst of unimaginable chaos!

There is power in music to touch lives. One Sunday at the conclusion of our worship service, as we were getting ready to leave, our organist played an old Fanny Crosby favourite. As the organ chords rang out, I wanted to sing aloud that wonderful tune and those words that meant so much to Fanny and to those who have heard it over the years:

    To God be the glory, great things He has done;
    So loved He the world that He gave us His Son,
    Who yielded His life an atonement for sin,
    And opened the life gate that all may go in.

Through God's gift of music, when we sing or listen with our hearts, we find our souls lifted into the joyful realm of God's kingdom. God's gift of music and song gives us joy, inspiration, strength, and enthusiasm for living. Singers and listeners are united through the gift of music, and we are joyfully reminded of God's love for us down through the ages, into our present day, and into the days yet to come.

Prayer: God of all good gifts, enable us to live out the good news, with the joy and inspiration with which You have blessed us through the gift of music and song, as You invite us to reach others and touch their lives with Your love. Amen.
