Introducing God To The Next Generation

Ephesians 3:17b-19 – And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge — that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. (NIV)

    If God is real, how can I know?
    What is my purpose for existing?

Our youth are asking questions like these, and we often feel ill-equipped to answer them. The Bible can guide us. In Scripture, human purpose is bound up with human origin: God created us for a purpose. We are designed to be filled with the fullness of God — that is, His love. Love fulfils the human need for security and purpose. Pope John Paul II put it this way:

    People cannot live without love. They remain beings that are incomprehensible to themselves; their life is senseless if love is not revealed to them; if they do not encounter love; if they do not experience it and make it their own. (Redemptor Hominis)

When our need for love is not met through God, we seek it in other ways. Yet apart from God, we will always fall short of the full experience of love. Our own measures inevitably prove to be deficient. Today, many youth and young adults are discovering this to be true. How can we help?

Today's Scripture indicates that as you and I grasp and know intimately the extravagant dimensions of God's love in Christ, we change. Our sense of security and purpose in God strengthens. Inevitably, others will recognize this quality. This is how we prove to the next generation that God is real. That is how they can discover God — and also their life purpose. It begins with you and me humbly offering ourselves to God through Christ — to be filled with His fullness.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, we abandon ourselves unreservedly to You, that we may be filled with Your fullness. Our heart's desire is that Your love will rule our lives, and that we will be so filled that we will pass on the good news to the next generation. Amen.
