Ephesians 2:4-7 – But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions — it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. (NIV)
Early one morning, I opened the living room curtains and looked out at the Morning Star and marvelled at its brightness. Then later over breakfast, I watched amazed as the television showed the galaxy of stars in space — so vast, so immense. There are over three billion stars in our galaxy alone. Where do we fit in?
God is very particular in working with His creation, so there must be a very special spot for us, right? Well, what do you think: are human beings on earth living in a special spot, or are we occupying but a pinprick in space?
The more we know from modern scientific exploration, the more we should stand amazed (or better, kneel amazed) that God loves us! Isn't that amazing? This human creature that occupies but a pinprick in space is greatly loved by the Creator! No way do we deserve it, yet Jesus was born on earth and came to show all of us how very special our relationship is with the Creator God. Jesus gave His life to prove it. "And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus." (Ephesians 2:6 NIV) Wow!
So, how do we respond? Well, some ignore Him, others scoff, others kneel down and worship. But most of us just take Him for granted. Yes, we attend church sometimes. Yes, we read the Scripture references referring to a Saviour born long ago, but how deep does He go in our belief system, into our very souls?
Then, feeling so small, like a pinprick in space, we see Jesus truly, and we fall on our knees. It's all true; He does love us. God does love His creation. I have found that the more I age and grow weaker, the closer to my Lord I grow. The Lord Jesus is here now walking beside me, strengthening and encouraging me all day long. Yes, you and I are very special pinpricks in space, and I love Him! I really do, and I expect you do too.
Prayer: Lord, as we fall on our knees in love and wonder, we are amazed at the vastness of space and our place in it. Thank You for creating us, and for sending Your Son, Jesus Christ, to be our Saviour. We respond in love and gratitude. Thank You for staying so close to us that we know that we are special to You — not that we deserve it, but that through Your grace we are far more than pinpricks in space. We belong to You. We are loved by You. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
