It was 1950. I had just graduated from high school. I eagerly headed out to Bible college to study God's Word. I was unaware, however, that I was about to commence my training with the development of a foundation of faith. It all started out with a five-dollar bill!
My father had told me that he could not support me financially through school. Things were tough. I was working in the school cafeteria all day, except when I was in classes, and earning seven dollars a week. I began praying that I would get some money in the mail. One day, I went to the mailbox to find an envelope from my father with the enclosure of a five-dollar bill. Thank You, Lord! This experience was repeated, bringing another five-dollar bill. By this time, I realized that my faith in God's promises was in the process of being strengthened.
Philippians 4:19 – And my God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. (NASB)
Many years later, another faith-building experience came to me while in a hospital pre-op holding area awaiting spinal surgery. It will be fair to say that I felt all alone and fearful. Scripture that a dear Christian friend had given me came to mind. As I recited this verse, a calmness and peace came over my body and spirit:
Isaiah 41:10 – So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. (NIV)
Another faith-building incident came up recently. While on the telephone listening to a friend who had issues of great concern, I prayed, asking the Lord to help by giving me the words to say in response to this highly emotional problem. The Holy Spirit gave me what needed to be said. Thank You, Lord!
In each of these circumstances, my faith was being built upon the everlasting foundation of God's provision, faithfulness, and power to answer prayer. No matter what our situation, when we turn to the Lord, He will never fail us. Through our increased faith, we can then reach out and help others. Let's exercise our privilege to approach His throne for every situation, today and every day!
Ephesians 3:20 – God can do anything, you know — far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! (MSG)
Prayer: Dear Father, we draw near to You with trusting and believing hearts in full assurance of faith that You hear us and will help us with our needs and the needs of others. In Jesus' precious name, we pray. Amen.
