He Restoreth My Soul

Listen to this devotional:

We often come to the end of our day with many of this world's stormy implications invading our thoughts. Sometimes, it's the impact of world news, where, for example, some people inflict great cruelty upon many others of their own race to vent their frustration. We try to evaluate these situations according to our understanding, or the economy, or the demands of our employment. Sometimes, our faith in God wavers.

Psalm 23:2b-3a – He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul. (KJV)

The shepherd's psalm of David is perhaps the most well-known of all his writings, and with each new aspect of his shepherd's care of the sheep, he interweaves his own spiritual experience of God's care for him: "He leadeth me beside the still waters." The stillness of the waters, so necessary for the safety of the sheep, suggests a word picture of God's peace, the kind that the world cannot give. David did not always understand his role or his world, but he recorded what God did do for him: "He restoreth my soul."

Time spent alone with our God puts many of our questions and misunderstandings into the correct perspective. Only our God can do this, whether the questionings or doubts are of a personal nature or otherwise. He and He alone can lead us to the still waters and impress upon our minds a stillness which this world cannot erase, and give answers to many of our questions.

Prayer: Our gracious heavenly Father, we live in a broken world. Help us with Your insights when we do not understand, so that we can try, with Your help, to give a sense of meaning to those around us who do not know You, even if we express only through our lives that picture of stillness and a restored life. We ask this petition in the name of Your Son and our Saviour, Christ Jesus. Amen.
