Isaiah 46:4a – Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. (NIV)
Psalm 55:22 – Cast your burden on the Lord, and He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved. (NKJV)
Now that I'm at that latter stage of life as an "Oh, you're looking well" person (which I insist on interpreting as "merely grown-up"), one or two may ask, "Isn't your work done yet? I thought you'd retired." Well, not quite. God will tell us when we're fired. How I delight in our loving Lord Christ, that we grown-ups and those getting on in life can celebrate the good news that Jesus has never finished with us! Hallelujah!
Even though some seniors might be physically infirm, perhaps confined in various ways, I fervently pray that we will share the experience of our Lord's comforting promise in today's verses — to sustain — carry, support, maintain, preserve, keep us from falling, and best of all, to give support to our resolves and decisions, and to keep us in effective living. I love this!
Countless people have brought about great and lasting improvements in secular history and in church history, who didn't have any impact until they reached our "Oh, you're looking well" stage of life. Through God-blessed stamina, Michelangelo was still designing buildings and painting at eighty-nine! Well, perhaps he left the ceiling painting to the younger generation, but isn't that just skilful, godly wisdom?
Distinct from the world's way, our God still has holy, fruitful purposes for His precious senior ones, for in our lovely Jesus Lord, we never cease to be precious and useful no matter how senior we become. By His Spirit, any service we may willingly offer to our Lord grows belief, confidence, and His power in us, which also speaks volumes to those around us, of His unchanging, ongoing promises and purposes for His children at every stage of life. Praise His persistent, triumphant name!
When our belief is as mature, immovable, and steadfast as Jesus is in us, we are an active force of love, wisdom, faithfulness, and power in the Christ! We can take territory for our Lord wherever we are. In Jesus' name, we can show forth the victory of His kingdom of righteousness, peace, and joy here on earth, through prayer and deeds of senior service unto Him.
Yes! When our focus is Jesus our Lord, "we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all." (2 Corinthians 4:16-17 NIV)
Psalm 71:18 – Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, O God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your might to all who are to come. (NIV)
Prayer: Praise and thanks for Your attentive love to our kneeling hearts, Lord. Through Your all-sustaining power, in its multifarious ways, we can still arise and shine, for Your light and glory is in truth upon us as we continue to grow up in You, our Almighty God of heaven and earth. Amen and Amen!
