The Agony Of Deceit

Listen to this devotional:

Genesis 3:6 – So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. (NKJV)

A number of years ago, my wife and I were attending a function in Maine, USA, just over the border from where we live. It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon. The fellowship with friends was wonderful. At one o'clock, they served some delicious food. After we had eaten our dinner, suddenly my wife began feeling ill. Being not far from the border, we wanted to get back to Canada and the hospital. It turned out that my wife was sick because of one of the foods she was served. It looked so good, but in this case, looks were deceiving. Fortunately, we weren't far from home and help, and she was distressed for only a few hours. Of course, this was not an intentional attack launched by our hosts at my wife.

There is, however, a mighty war raging in the spiritual realm where deceit is the weapon, and the soul of man is the target! Satan is the enemy and leader of our foes, and his legions of followers, who are seemingly truthful, are out to deceive the whole world.

1 Peter 5:8 – Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. (NKJV)

2 Corinthians 11:3 – But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. (NKJV)

The Bible tells us that we must put our faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ, for He assures us, "In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world." (John 16:33b NKJV) The amazing thing is that by the power of His Spirit, His victory can become ours.

Through the power of His shed blood, we are given eternal life, as well as all we need to live lives pleasing to Him while we are here, including the ability to discern between truth and error, which comes through study of His word. We have been given victory over the enemy because our Lord has defeated him!

Colossians 2:8 – Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ. (NKJV)

Prayer: Heavenly Father, we thank You for the victory won by the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ and His bodily resurrection from the dead. We thank You that because of Him, we need not be deceived by the enemy, but have the power from Your word to discern between truth and error, and the power of the Holy Spirit who teaches us in all truth. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
