A Royal Name

Listen to this devotional:

Romans 8:17 – Now if we are children, then we are heirs — heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. (NIV)

1 Peter 2:9 – But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. (NIV)

The name of my Ragdoll pedigree kitten's sire is Brightstone Prince Charming, so coming up with a royal name to register it was no easy task. Nevertheless, with a little help from my sister, I discovered that "rey" is Spanish for "king", and I finally decided on this name for my Christmas gift:

    Charming Rey Niklas Noel

This distinguished name was thoughtfully selected especially for him. Of course, we simply call him Nikkie (with a unique spelling) for short!

Like most readers, I am just an ordinary Christian with no trace of royalty in my background, at least not that I am aware of. In the light of the Scriptures, however, all believers are considered royal heirs of Christ, and our names are forever recorded in the "Lamb's Book of Life".

Proverbs 22:1 tells us that names are associated with character: "A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold." (NIV)

Considering the qualities true to the nature of most Ragdolls, I realized that these traits were the reason my kitten was adopted into my family in the first place. Yet in the family of God and through His saving grace, our Lord adopts us as His children while we are yet sinners. Through the power of His Spirit, God has given us a new nature: a nature that reflects the image of His Son. We must take care to avoid doing anything that would bring shame to the name we bear.

Reflecting the image of God's Son should be the purpose and aspiration of every believer, in spite of worldly obstacles, suffering or poverty. We are called to live a life worthy of our high calling in which God has made us royal heirs of Christ's kingdom.

Prayer: Father, thank You for the blessed privilege of having our names registered in the Lamb's Book of Life. Help each of us always to honour You by living a life worthy of our high calling in Christ Jesus our Lord. For His name's sake, we pray. Amen.
