My Sister, My Bride

Song of Solomon 4:9 – You have stolen my heart, my sister, my bride; you have stolen my heart with one glance of your eyes, with one jewel of your necklace. (NIV)

Psalm 17:15 – And I — in righteousness I will see your face; when I awake, I will be satisfied with seeing your likeness. (NIV)

It has been more than two years since my sister passed away from complications of multiple sclerosis. Life for her was one of sadness and pain, suffering many years with schizophrenia. I was thankful that God allowed me the responsibility of visiting and caring for her after my mother's illness and death. A unique bond was formed at this time, and became a turning point in our lives. Although some times were sad, I will always treasure the precious moments my sister and I shared, especially the memories of her smile and simple child-like faith.

In her youth, my sister's dream was to become a bride. Unfortunately, her hope would never be fulfilled. However, I am reminded of the wonderful wedding yet to take place for all believers that is described in many passages of God's Word, including some of Jesus' parables. The apostle John, in his vision, announces:

Revelation 19:7-8a – For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready. Fine linen, bright and clean, was given her to wear. (NIV)

The church, presently in the betrothal stage of our relationship with Christ, can look forward to this magnificent event when we shall proclaim to the world that the Lord God Almighty reigns!

Featured on the cover of a Christian magazine was a beautiful illustration of the church as the Bride of Christ. Depicted on her pure white veil and wedding gown are the images of many who belong to the Lord. My sister being a member of the Bride, I have no doubt that the deeper longing of her soul is perfectly satisfied. She may now behold the face of her Saviour, who has wiped away every tear from her eyes, the pain and sorrow of this world forever forgotten.

Prayer: Lord, we thank You that in the midst of the anguish and struggles of this life, we have the blessed assurance that You have prepared a place for us in heaven. We rejoice with our loved ones who have gone before us and are now resting in Your arms of love. We look forward to the day when we will celebrate together the marriage supper of the Lamb and the eternal blessings of our heavenly Bridegroom — Jesus. In His name, we pray. Amen.
