Middle-aged Susan dreamed of being a professional singer. The odds seemed against her, but she held on to that dream through all sorts of setbacks and disappointments. She kept her composure even when people laughed at her.
Average-looking, unassuming Susan Boyle walked onto the Britain's Got Talent stage and faced ridicule, unbelief, and laughter. Then, she opened her mouth and began to sing. From the first note, it became clear that audience, judges, and viewers had made a huge mistake by judging her on appearance alone. Susan's voice is absolutely incredibly wonderful.
Acts 18:8b-11 – In the course of listening to Paul, a great many Corinthians believed and were baptized. One night the Master spoke to Paul in a dream: "Keep it up, and don't let anyone intimidate or silence you. No matter what happens, I'm with you and no one is going to be able to hurt you. You have no idea how many people I have on my side in this city." That was all he needed to stick it out. He stayed another year and a half, faithfully teaching the Word of God to the Corinthians. (MSG)
I cheered wildly for Susan, but not because of the way she sings. I cheered for her because it gave me a glimpse into my future and yours. We are not too old. We are not too frumpy. We have talent. God is with us. We are not alone. And that's all we need to know to stick it out.
Prayer: Lord, help us do what it takes today, no matter what. For Christ's sake, we pray. Amen.
