The Sun Of Righteousness

Listen to this devotional:

Malachi 4:2 – But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings. And you will go out and leap like calves released from the stall. (NIV)

February 24th this year was the third anniversary of my mother's death. Before she died, I painfully watched her suffer from dementia and heart disease. By God's grace, this sorrow would prepare me to let go, knowing He was preparing a place for her in heaven.

As I remember the day of my mother's passing, I am grateful for God's mercy and strength. I was comforted by my sister, her husband, and a health care worker who was with my mother just hours before her death. Though it was cloudy and gloomy that day, they witnessed something very unusual. For a moment, the sun peeked brightly through the clouds and shone directly on my mother. It then warmly covered her with brilliant sunlight in such a way that will never be forgotten.

This beautiful testimony brought to mind today's Scripture from Malachi 4:2, depicting the rising of the sun with its wing-like rays introducing the dawning of a new day. It expresses the joy of calves being set free as they are released from being cooped-up in their stalls out into the open pasture. I imagined my mother felt like one of those calves being set free from her illness and pain, finally to be with the Saviour she loved and lived for.

God's promise of healing is available for all of us who love and revere His name. Like the sun sending its beams of light, Jesus, the Son of Righteousness, eliminates the darkness and gloom with the brightness of His glory.

Prayer: Father, we thank You for the new day that has dawned through the coming of Your Son, Jesus, into our lives and for the promise of His healing for all those who love You. Amen.
