1 Corinthians 2:7 – No, we speak of God's secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. (NIV)
The other evening as I was watching the news on television, a clip provided coverage of a very large showing of the latest technological toys soon to come onto the market. The next morning, I heard a report on a radio programme from one of their staff who had been sent to this same show. Describing his attendance, he said, "I feel like a child in a candy store."
We all know or can imagine what it is like to be in a candy store filled with all sorts of different delectable candies. I thought about all the technology used to make things smaller and smaller, with more bells and whistles. My digital camera is much improved and a lot smaller, and I have all my music stored on my little iPod Shuffle®. Even the laptop computer I am working on is smaller, yet more powerful, and the Internet allows us to do more and more things every day.
As I thought more deeply about how delightful all this inventive technology is, my thoughts quickly switched to how exciting it would be if Christians caught the same intensity of desire for learning God's Word and the same deep yearning for the work He has for us to do.
Psalm 119, the longest chapter in the Bible, is all about the psalmist's love for the Word of God. Nine times he says that God's words, laws, decrees, statutes, and promises are his "delight"! In verse 111, he says, "They are the joy of my heart," and in verse 103, "How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!" (NIV)
We need to draw closer to God, to rediscover this delight in God's Word. Though we don't need anything more than a Bible, there are many versions freely and easily available on the Internet, or on a program we can install on one of those toys. The Word will speak to us, if only we will listen. Then, we can know and understand what it is God wants for us.
Let us pray that in relationship to His Word, we will each become like a child of God in a candy store, where we will want more and more. After receiving our fill and living in faith and hope, we will want to share this Good News with others.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, we come to You this day desiring a thirst for Your Word, ready to listen and to do what You would have us do. Fill us with the Holy Spirit and the desire to know more, that we might grow in the knowledge You have given to us as a gift. Teach us to use this gift as a treasure to serve You here on earth, looking to the day when we will be forever with You. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
