Jeremiah 17:9-10a – The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? I the Lord search the heart. (KJV)
I was talking to a little person on the phone recently. Out of the blue, she asked, "And what do you like to do the very best?" In other words, she asked me to say what my favourite thing to do is. I was stopped short by this deep question from a six-year-old. I told her that I like to spend time with her and that I like to talk to her. She is a very relational child. I like to think she likes to talk to me and likes to spend time with me, too. I see by her actions that she does. She phones me often during the week. The hard question is whether I show her that I like to spend time with her. Actions speak louder than words.
We have a heavenly Father who likes to spend time with us. He sent His Son to die on the cross so that we could have a close relationship with Him.
Is He asking us, "What do you like to do the very best?" What is our answer? Is our answer only a verbal one? Or is it shown by our actions? Actions do speak louder than words. Whether we answer the question only with words, or deep in our hearts, He knows the real answer. Do we show Him that we like to spend time with Him by reading His Word, by praying, by fellowshipping with other believers?
God knows us better than we know ourselves. He knows our hearts. He searches our hearts. Let's show God by our actions that we are speaking the truth. That is what He wants.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, we don't always like to be asked hard questions. Sometimes, we brush them off, not wanting to look at them or to admit to the answer that we know isn't as it should be. Help us to speak the truth. You know it anyway, and yet, You want to hear us give the answer to You. Sometimes, we have to give the answer to others in our lives, and that can help us to break denial in our lives. How we need You today! Amen.
