How Old Will You Be?

Listen to this devotional:

Psalm 145:4 – One generation shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts. (KJV)

One day not so long ago, our eldest granddaughter, who is just six, asked me how old I was. Then she asked me how much older I was than she.

I explained that I was almost 54 years older than she, which prompted a bit of a math lesson, as well as a lesson in life, love, and ultimate "Thanks".

It started with her asking how old I'd be when she was ten. So we did the math. Then she asked how old I'd be when she was twenty. Again we did the math. She then asked how old I'd be when she was the age I am now, almost 60, to which I replied, with a sudden lump in my throat, "I wouldn't be here anymore, sweetheart."

We all know that with the grace of God, we will not outlive our grandchildren; and well we know that there's extremely little to no possibility of living to the ripe old age of 126. And yet, when it's all of a sudden voiced for the very first time to an innocently trusting little soul, it has a way of sucker-punching one's emotions.

We talked about heaven and the hope that that's where I would be. I couldn't help but be thankful for my faith, for how sombre and sad it is to think that for some, for those who believe in nothing, death is seen as the absolute end.

It is for us to pass on our God's great works from one generation to the next — the most important of which is the love of God: the gift of the miracle of life, the blessing of the love we can share with each other, our families, our friends, our fellow man.

Prayer: Lord, we thank You for the time we have on this earth, the time to share with our loved ones; the time to appreciate all that we are so freely given, the time to be thankful for all the things we can do and are able to do. For this and for so much more, we give thanks. In Your name we pray and give thanks for this day. Amen.
