New Every Morning

Listen to this devotional:

Lamentations 3:22-23 – Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. (NIV)

There is a weight loss program which gives a point value for every kind of food that we dieters eat. We quickly discover the foods with low point values. On the computer, all we have to do is enter what we have eaten during the day, and the computer magically searches the point value and indicates how many points are left for the rest of the day's diet. The real magic of this program happens every morning when the points are renewed. Beginning each day with a full set of points is like a brand new beginning. It's like God's grace and the gift of His blessings, which are every new day. They are there for us to use or to ignore. God's steadfast love and mercy help us to get through each day.

Many of us, when we read today's Scripture verses, probably also hear the music of "Great is Thy Faithfulness" in our ears. The author of this great hymn, Thomas O. Chisholm, in a letter dated 1941, wrote, "My income has not been large at any time due to impaired health in the earlier years which has followed me on until now. Although I must not fail to record here the unfailing faithfulness of a covenant-keeping God and that He has given me many wonderful displays of His providing care, for which I am filled with astonishing gratefulness."

As we begin this new day, let us give thanks, for God's blessings are new every morning.

Prayer: Loving and gracious God, we thank You for Your steadfast love and mercy. Thank You that they are new every morning. Help us to draw on Your love and mercy as we walk through this day. In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.
