Listen to this devotional:
Genesis 1:20-22 – And God said, "Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky." So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. God blessed them and said, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth." (NIV)
As I write, the birds in the nearby trees are singing their hearts out. Every evening as the sun is setting, they serenade the residents of our mobile home park, regaling us with their lilting music. It is springtime, which means that their songs are meant to impress and attract a mate. If they are successful, we will soon see them flying to and fro from nests built high in the trees, feeding a bevy of hungry mouths. Then in the fall, we shall lose them, one flock at a time, as they fly south to escape the snow and cold of our winters. Ah, but next spring, many will be back to nest once again in our trees. Then the serenade will begin all over again!
I do so love spring and the birdsong, but even more do I love the first chapter of Genesis. There, we read that our loving Creator compassionately created things just because He wished good for our planet Earth. Just think, God placed the birds here from the desire to bless this world — which I take to mean, us! Isn't that a phenomenal thought — that God should care so much? That's so amazing! But even more amazing is what John wrote in his Gospel:
John 3:16-17 – For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. (NIV)
You see, God does care. God cares far more than we can begin to imagine. That's why He created at the beginning and why He came in Christ Jesus to offer us a forever life with Him.
Now that's something worth singing about!
Prayer: Amazing Creator, Your grace astounds us. Your love surrounds us. Your blessings overflow into our lives. Thank You for caring so much. Why, even the birds sing Your praises! But most of all, thank You for Your gift to us through Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen.
