John 14:6a – Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life." (NRSV)
I have come to realize a lack of self-study. Just when I think I have it all together, something happens to make me see a need for a deeper inner look at myself. In a given situation, I often fail to understand the ego in me. In other words, I tend to leave out Christ in me.
Jesus said that He is the truth. God's truth cuts through painfully, yet with healing.
A step towards truth seems difficult to take. The built-in sin in us does not easily give way to truth. To be revealed as a sinner falling short of the glory of God can be painful for the human ego. We have done fine without knowing the whole truth about ourselves, yet we desire to seek the truth. Something draws us to find the truth. The Holy Spirit of God encounters us with truth.
A complete makeover according to God's truth is necessary. What we have trusted before has not been the truth. Our own foundation crumbles when God's truth finds us out — truth we thought impossible.
I picture a golden key turning a lock to open our heart, unlocking it for a message from God. What we have not understood before becomes clear. When we let His truth take over our lives, our own "truth" takes its leave and has no takers.
Jesus offers His truth and His love for truth. Happy is the one who receives the way, the truth, and the life in Jesus.
Prayer: God of all truth! We pray to be people of the way, the truth, and the life in Jesus' name. Amen.
