Nothing Lasts Forever?

Listen to this devotional:

1 John 2:17 – The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever. (NIV)

I had something out of my mouth before I thought!

In a recent conversation on the telephone, I asked about a new espresso machine that my husband had purchased, wondering how much he should have spent to have something half decent.

After I disclosed what he had paid, the reply was, "That will be good enough for all you would use it! The best one is like the restaurants use, and they cost around ten thousand dollars. They last forever!"

Without thinking, I responded, "Nothing lasts forever!" After I had this out of my mouth, I thought, How could I have said that? Spiritual things last forever!

God and His love last forever, for example. The sacrifice that our Saviour Jesus made on the cross for our sin will last forever. "He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself." (Hebrews 7:27 NIV) And those who receive Him and His forgiveness, He has set on the pathway to last forever.

Prayer: Most gracious heavenly Father, we give thanks for Your Son Who suffered, died, and was bodily resurrected to be with You in heaven. Enable us to recognize and to thank You that although the world and its desires will pass away, through Your grace shown to us in Your Son, Jesus, we who believe will last forever. Amen.
