John 21:12 – Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." None of the disciples dared ask him, "Who are you?" They knew it was the Lord. (NIV)
The alarm goes off; the neighbour's rooster crows; I climb out of bed and dress. The first rays of morning light find me on the way to the YMCA. As I drive, thoughts of praise and thanks for the birth of this day fill my mind. I feel so blessed to be granted a new day of life on earth. Meanwhile, my husband goes to meet the Arthritis Club, a group of his friends, at a local coffee shop. After a workout in water aerobics, my friends and I, too, go out for breakfast.
Jesus knew the value of an early morning breakfast with friends. The disciples had been out fishing, but had caught nothing until Jesus arrived. He told them where to cast their nets. Then, the catch was large. When they arrived on shore, Jesus invited them to "Come and have breakfast." He knew His friends were hungry after a long and anxious night's work. He also had some spiritual food He wanted to share with them.
Jesus still offers this invitation to breakfast with Him, to feed on His Word. Whether over a cup of coffee with friends, or over toast and coffee at home alone, we can still share the first light of the new day with Him. It will strengthen and help us throughout the day.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, be our breakfast guest. Share with us Your wisdom for the living of each day. Open up the bonds of friendship that unite us, and fill us with nourishment from Your Word for the living of the day. Amen.
