Cornerstone

Listen to this devotional:

Isaiah 28:16 – So this is what the Sovereign Lord says: "See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who trusts will never be dismayed." (NIV)

It seems that the world is beginning to feel stressed out about Christmas, and there isn't any fun in it anymore. Recent news items and magazine articles appear to be bewailing the fact that Christmas is putting so much pressure on all of us that we cannot enjoy it anymore.

I guess we could have told them that long ago. Without the proper cornerstone in Christmas, without Jesus at the heart of all we do, there is no meaning, there is no purpose, there is no satisfaction. It just becomes an excuse to overindulge, overimbibe, and overstretch our patience, budgets, and strength.

But with Jesus placed at the centre of our traditions, dismay disappears, and joy jumps back into our lives. We realize it's a great gift to be given by God, and we relearn to rejoice because God has reclaimed us for His everlasting kingdom.

So, if we come across people who are weary of Christmas and are under a lot of pressure, let us gently remind them that they are loved by God, who calls us each to be a child of His grace, both now and always.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, we've turned Christmas upside down and turned it into a whirlwind of wanting to please other people. Help us to retrace the ways of the past, and within our hearts recreate the cornerstone of Christmas — Your birth and Your glory, Your return and Your love, forever and ever. Amen.
