Grace When Needed

Listen to this devotional:

Hebrews 4:16 – Let us be brave, then, and approach God's throne, where there is grace. There we will receive mercy and find grace to help us just when we need it. (GNB)

I have coloured my hair myself for years. I would go to the store and pick a colour that I thought was closest to my natural hair colour.

Then, I decided that I would go to a salon and have it professionally coloured. That way, it would always be the same colour when it was finished. However, the expense of doing this was an issue, so one day, I decided I would colour my own hair once again. I dashed to the drug store, chose a colour and brought it home, excited to be saving money.

When the colouring process was done, and I washed and crème rinsed it, I was horrified at the colour of my hair. It was almost black. I panicked and ran to the store again to buy a lighter colour, hoping it would lighten my hair. It didn't.

This was early on Friday evening. I knew my hair stylist's shop was open late on Fridays, so I called her to see if I could get in and if she could do something with my hair. The timing was wonderful. She had a cancellation. So in I went. She streaked it, and it looked really good when she was finished. She never charged me for that appointment, under one condition: that I would never colour my hair by myself again.

I had created the problem of the colour of my hair by a choice. I looked at myself in the mirror and saw the mistake I had made. I called my stylist. She treated me with grace — even though I did not expect that at all. What more could I want?

2 Corinthians 9:8 – And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. (ESV)

So many times, we cause problems in our own lives by the choices we make. Sometimes, we don't even know how we got there. Often, though, we can see the results of our choices. We do have an avenue to follow during these times. We can call on God. And He treats us with grace. Isn't that wonderful?

Prayer: God, thank You so much for Your grace extended to us. We can't do life on our own. We need Your grace every minute of every day. Help us to look at ourselves and reach out to You. Amen.
