Free Gift

Listen to this devotional:

James 1:17 – Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. (NKJV)

We have all seen the signs and read the flyers offering "free" gifts. Our son recently read a sign outside a bank, which said, "Open a bank account and receive a free iPod." This was of interest to him, as he had just finished saving money from his paper route to purchase an iPod. He was also aware that as he had been saving his money and putting it into the bank, he had not received from the bank a lot of interest on his money. He was confused as to how the bank could offer a free iPod if one opened an account.

He knew that they had the use of his money while it was in the bank. We talked about how the iPod was not really free — that the bank would be covering the cost of it in service charges and through the money the bank saved by paying so little interest for the use of his money.

We have the greatest free gift of all: our Lord and Saviour came so that we could have eternal life. How hard it is at times for the unbelievers of this world to come to accept this truly free gift. They are looking for the loophole or the catch to this, just as our son was questioning the bank's offer. Jesus did not come with a catch or a loophole. He came that we may have life and life more abundantly.

1 John 3:16 – By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. (NKJV)

Prayer: Dear Jesus, help us to show the world the greatest free gift — Your gift to us. Help us not to become ensnared in all the false and empty gifts that the world offers us. We need to show the world love and grace in all that we do, so that others will see something different in us. It will be through that love that they will come to know You. Amen.
