Highlight Of My Week

Listen to this devotional:

Psalm 12:5 – "Because of the oppression of the weak and the groaning of the needy, I will now arise," says the Lord. "I will protect them from those who malign them." (NIV)

To some, seeing a little boy waving wouldn't add up to being listed as the highlight of your week. But to me it was. "I saw you," he said, as I drew closer to where the nine-year-old was standing in the foyer of the school. "I wanted to tell you my story." Earlier in the day, I'd been in this boy's classroom, and in my role as a visiting author, we'd been making up a story. This little fellow didn't volunteer his suggestions in class. Perhaps because of his speech impediment, he didn't feel confident enough to speak to a stranger in front of his peers. In any case, it was evident that the story idea was still perking in his mind — enough so that when he met me as I was leaving the school, he had to share.

"I want to tell you what I'd do if I found a giant." The words seemed like they bubbled out of his mouth. "I'd call my friend to get his bulldozer and move the giant out of the way."

In the story we'd been making up in class, the children had been confronted by a giant. Some found safety in the basement, hiding in the dark. Others ran to hide behind the school in a grove of trees, while others hid in the janitor's closet. In all the solutions offered, the children thought of hiding. I challenged them to think of a surprise ending to our story and write it down. Ben (not his real name) faced his giant. He called on others to help him move it out of the way.

When we are facing the impossible, we don't need to fear or scurry to find a place in which to hide, for we don't need to face our giants by ourselves. God is our friend, and when we call on Him, He will help us move the giants in our lives.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You that we can come to You and ask for help when the giants in our lives hold us in the grip of fear. Amen.
