Who Am I, Lord?

Listen to this devotional:

2 Samuel 7:18b – Who am I, O Sovereign Lord, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? (NIV)

I say before the Lord, having questioned myself about what we just read: "Who am I, Lord?"

Often this question enters my mind as we begin yet another new year, and the things in which we are involved start up. Prayerfully, we hope our works will bring new life in our community of faith.

I pose a second question: "Lord, how will we use the gifts, which You have given us, to please You?"

In thinking about this, I began to realize it's not so much about gifts as it is about growing closer to God in fellowship and about being aware that He is sovereign. Perhaps we need to stop asking what we can do and how we can serve, and instead, just say, "Here I am, Lord; let's talk!"

Meditating upon the Lord in the quiet of His presence in our busy lives is not always easy. Now that my husband is retired and we are living in smaller quarters, quiet places, along with time alone, are hard to find.

As husband and wife, we could have this quiet time together, and often we do, to study the Word of God, but it seems to me that each of us needs prayer time alone with God. We need time to meditate in silence, and after our talk with God, we need to listen!

Prayer: O Sovereign Lord, hear us as we search for some quiet place to be alone with You. Lift our spirits that we may meditate and know who we are, and that You have brought us this far. Busy as we may be, enable us to discipline ourselves, that we might grow closer in fellowship with You. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
