The Old, Old Story – Ever New

Tuesday, December 19, 2006
Listen to this devotional:

Luke 2:11-12 – For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord, And this will be the sign to you; You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger. (NKJV)

It's getting near that time again — with children getting excited and wanting to hear the old, old story once again. The one I refer to here is "The Night Before Christmas", when not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. Have you, like me, been guilty of reading this story over and over to them, but neglecting to give the same repetition to the true old, old story of Jesus and His love?

Today, more than ever, we need to sit down beside them and read the story of God sending His Son Who would be born in a manger. We need to emphasize that Jesus came to bring peace and goodwill to the world — a world not unlike today where people need to know this. What a story to send them off to sleep with and to calm their busy minds!

Let us spread the good tidings, which the angels proclaimed when Jesus was born, and keep the old, old story ever new.

Prayer: Dear Father, thank You for the beautiful Christmas gift, which You sent to the world, wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger. May we always choose the right words to bring the message to all Your children big and small. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
