Exodus 33:14 – The Lord replied, "My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest." (NIV)
One morning recently, I drove by the ambulance service and the fire department on my way into town. Later, at eleven o'clock, I came back down the same street. Both buildings were gone. Behind where they had stood was a beautiful new building that would house the two services. The land the old buildings had occupied now served as the entrance to the new building. I blinked and did a double-take, trying to visualize the scene as it had been earlier in the day. It's not often that change comes that rapidly, even in the twenty-first century of rapid change.
Change comes faster and faster as we grow older. Friends die; landscapes change as progress sweeps through the communities we once knew so well. New generations come into power, and our children and their peers become the leaders of the community. The world as our generation knew it has changed. We are strangers in a land that was once ours.
In this changing world, one factor still holds true. God is in charge. We may not know what the future holds, but we know Who holds the future. Wherever we go, whatever we do, His Spirit is within us and goes before us.
If we allow our spirit to be still and experience the loving presence of the living God, we are relieved of fear, anxiety, and loneliness. We know we are not alone, that His Presence is always with us, as He has been in the past.
God is powerful enough to have created the universe and all that dwells therein. Yet, He is gentle and loving enough to care for all our needs. All that is necessary is for us to be quiet and to tune in to the loving and healing presence of our Lord.
Prayer: Lord, may we enter into Your loving presence. Thank You for Your love and faithfulness. Amen.
