Daniel 12:1 – At that moment Michael shall appear, Michael the great captain, who stands guard over your fellow countrymen; and there will be a time of distress such as has never been since they became a nation till that moment. But at that moment your people will be delivered, every one who is written in the book. (NEB)
Sorting through the messages in my inbox, I discovered an e-mail regarding the fifty-year reunion of my high school graduating class. Attached was a list of my former classmates who had registered to attend. I struggled as I read those names, trying to remember what each person looked like. How, I wondered, would they look now, 50 years later?
At that very moment, I had a flashback, a memory of my father and his wonderful sense of humour. It made me laugh right out loud. I remembered asking him if he had enjoyed his fifty-year class reunion. He told me that he had walked into the room and looked around, but he didn't recognize anyone. Then he turned to my mother and asked her, "Who are all these old people?"
Would I feel the same way when I encountered my former classmates? Would they look at me and not recognize me? Would they be silently asking themselves, "Who is that old lady?" I wasn't at all sure that I wanted to have such an experience!
A few days later, while sealing my registration envelope, I thought about how blessed I am. Having accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour, my name has already been added to the most important list of all, the list in the Book of the Lamb. How I look or how well I have aged will be unimportant. One bright morning, I'll be recognized, and I'll be called by name.
Prayer: Dear heavenly Father, we thank You for calling us to the Christian faith and for the opportunity to witness to the life of Your Son, Jesus the Christ. We are so grateful that, as Jesus' disciples, our names have been written in the Book of Life. In His holy name we pray. Amen.
