Love Letters

Listen to this devotional:

2 Timothy 3:16-17 – All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. (NIV)

Some fifty years ago, I met a young man who would one day become my husband. He had just begun a new job and was sent out west for a short time, a time which to me seemed endless.

There were no computers and no e-mail, so I would wait for those letters to come — letters that expressed his love for me. I kept those letters, tied with a ribbon and stored in a drawer, and I read them over and over again.

Recently, as I was reading my Bible, I found today's Scripture that at some time in the past I had underlined. Beside it, I had written in the margin, "Inspired by God — God's love letter". All God's love letters to us are stored in His Word.

Just as my love letters have relatively little significance to anyone else, so God's love letters in the Bible, as well as our beliefs as professing Christians, seemingly lie hidden from unbelievers. Until they gain their own relationship with God, they will not understand or appreciate the Scriptures.

2 Timothy 1:8a,10b,13,14 – So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord … our Saviour, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus. Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you — guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us. (NIV)

Prayer: Dear Lord, we come to You, praying the prayer Jesus taught His disciples: "Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one." May we treasure Your love letters, inspired in truth, recorded in Your holy Word, the Bible. Give us strength to stand firm, trusting in You, our God, withstanding temptations to doubt our faith. In the name of Jesus, our Lord and our Saviour, we pray. Amen.
