Matthew 11:28-30 – Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you shall find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My load is light. (NASB)
I have a wonderful piece of furniture on my patio in the backyard. It is a swing in which two or three people can sit. It has a canopy to offer shade from the hot sun. I love sitting there and enjoying the smells of springtime, the sounds of the summer out-of-doors, and the sight of the clear blue sky.
Often, my family, my friends, or my neighbours sit there with me. As we drink a glass of iced water or lemonade, we talk. We share our lives with each other. We share our victories and our struggles. We laugh with each other and cry with each other. Sometimes we pray. There's something about sitting outside, gently swinging, that causes us to be candid. I have named this special spot "My Relationship Swing". I cherish the moments I spend with others there. We are building relationships.
John 1:12 – But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name. (NASB)
God is a God of relationships. First of all, He wants a relationship with us. Then He wants us to have relationships with others. We need others — for acceptance, for love, for sharing without judgment. How lonely life would be without Him and without other people.
Yet it takes time to build relationships. Let's be consistent in building our relationships with God and with others.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You that You are a God of relationships — first, a relationship with You, and then with others. You never intended for us to do life alone. Help us, we pray, to build those healthy relationships. Amen.
