Psalm 12:6 – And the words of the Lord are flawless, like silver refined in a furnace of clay, purified seven times. (NIV)

Going through my collection of books recently, in hope of eliminating some through a sale, I found many types of Bibles collected through the years. There were many different versions, some being translations and others paraphrases. These Bibles had been purchased from sales, because I could not resist buying them. They were treasures I wanted to possess.

I could not help thinking how little value is placed on a copy of the Bible today. Like me, most people have many different versions. Members of my family have their own personal Bibles, and many of them are gathering dust, like the ones in my collection. But the value of the Bible is in direct proportion to its use. The more it is used, the more valuable it becomes. Here, where we have so many Bibles available, we find spiritual illiteracy. In other parts of the world, where the Book is rare, there is great spiritual hunger for the Word.

Mark 12:24 – Jesus replied, "Are you not in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God?" (NIV)

The Apostle Paul, in writing to Timothy, affirmed the value of the Bible.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 – All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. (NIV)

The forces of darkness are attacking our Judeo-Christian heritage today. We need to know what the Scriptures say in order to defend our faith. The Bible has been the best seller, year after year, for many decades. We need to open up the Book and read its pages.

Prayer: Lord, inspire us to open Your Word and read it, so we may know how useful it is for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in Your righteousness. Equip us to do Your work. Amen.
