John 21:15 – When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these?" "Yes, Lord," he said, "you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Feed my lambs." (NIV)
Last month, some members of our community took time from their daily routine to help people whose lives had been shattered by the hurricane, Katrina. They gathered a truckload of blankets, non-perishable food items, medical supplies, and two commercial tents, then drove south, taking their gifts to people who had lost all their worldly possessions in the storm.
Although the list of donations and gifts seemed to be very practical, one item puzzled me until I heard the explanation. Apparently the day the men loaded the truck, there wasn't one can opener left for sale in our community. They had gathered all 250 of them to take with them. Why? Because even though they had food to give the storm refugees, they wouldn't be able to eat it if they didn't have a way to open it.
As I listened to the volunteers' story, I was reminded of the many people in our neighbourhoods who are suffering a spiritual death because no one has shared spiritual food with them in a way they could understand. The Bible contains the solution to their hunger, but we who know Christ need to be the "can openers", so to speak. One of the ways we can do this is by allowing our actions to demonstrate God's love to the hurting people in our communities.
Prayer: Dear God, open our eyes, and help us to share with those in our families and neighbourhoods who are hungry to know about You today. Amen.
