John 10:2-3 – But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. The watchman opens the door for this man, and the sheep listen to his voice and heed it; and he calls His own sheep by name and brings (leads) them out. (AMP)
Recently, I attended a church where I was a comparative newcomer, and a man said "Good morning, Vena." I was so utterly amazed that I could only stand and stare at him. He not only welcomed me with the customary salutation, but he knew me by name!
Each of us has a name that is so very special and personal. My name is pretty but unusual, difficult to remember, often mispronounced, and frequently misspelled, but regardless, I am so glad my parents chose it for me. Our Bible does not go on to explain the miracle that of all the multitudes who recognize Jesus as the Good Shepherd, He knows each one by name.
In times gone by, I would have been able to recognize my mother's voice from many other women. If she called my name from a distance it would sound high-pitched with a slightly musical tone. In latter years I would have been able to recognize my husband's voice as he pronounced my name.
Today, when we hear our Good Shepherd call us by name, we also can recognize His voice immediately because of our special relationship to Him. May we also endeavour to go a little further and obey His voice.
Prayer: Dear heavenly Father, thank You that You call us each by name. We come to You at the very beginning of this day to ask You to keep us in Your care until the day is ended. Help us to do our part to listen to and obey the voice of our Good Shepherd guiding us in the way we should go. We bring this petition to You in the name of Your Son, Christ Jesus and our Good Shepherd. Amen.
