Genesis 3:9-10 – The Lord God called to the man, "Where are you?" He answered, "I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid." (NIV)
When our children were growing up, we purchased a horse called Luckie. Unlike many other things acquired during these years, she did not wear out. After the children were grown, gone away to college, and on to careers and homes of their own, Luckie still called our pasture home.
Well into her thirties, she was too old for children to ride on or for being of service to anyone. The only way to dispose of a senior horse is unmentionable here. My husband and I fed and cared for her, and she grew old along with us.
We lived in a subdivision on a busy street. Our fear was that Luckie would get out of the pasture into the street and cause problems. In her earlier years, this had happened. As she grew older, she seemed to develop a "knowing of where she belonged". Several times, when visiting children left the gate to the pasture open, Luckie would come stand at our kitchen door and wait for us. To her, we were the masters who fed and cared for her. She had no desire to leave us.
Might we not develop this kind of relationship with our Master, instead of straying into dangerous paths? Instead of hiding, as Adam did because he was ashamed, what if we were to seek Him out? When He calls "Where are you?" how blessed we would be if we answered, "Here am I, Lord, waiting for You."
How wonderful it is when we seek God because we know Who our Master is, instead of hiding behind fig leaves because we have sinned and are ashamed.
Prayer: Lord, may we be ready and waiting when You call for us. May our answer be "Here am I, Lord — waiting for You." Amen.
